Engaging Hearts,
Empowering Lives,
and Elevating Communities
At “I” DEFINE, we guide individuals impacted by trauma, incarceration, or addiction to awaken their potential, break free from limiting patterns, and reclaim their lives with purpose and empowerment. And when individuals step into their strength, communities begin to heal, cycles are broken, and lasting change takes root.
Ohio’s Reality
Across Ohio, our neighborhoods are facing serious and overlapping challenges — rising gun violence, addiction, and the ongoing cycle of incarceration. These issues affect all of us, whether we live in cities like Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, or in the small towns and rural areas in between.
Right now, more than 45,000 people are in Ohio’s prisons, more than 20,000 in local jails, and nearly 5,000 are in federal facilities. That’s tens of thousands of Ohioans behind bars — and nearly 3 out of 10 return within three years, showing how deeply the cycle of incarceration continues.
Addiction touches almost one million Ohioans, and every year more than 4,000 people lose their lives to overdose. Families are left grieving, communities are left struggling, and the ripple effects stretch far beyond the individual. Addiction isn’t just a statistic — it’s a statewide crisis stealing lives at an alarming rate.
Gun violence has also reached a crisis point. Ohio loses nearly 1,800 people each year to firearms, and the overall gun death rate has surged by 68% over the last decade. For our youth, guns have become the leading cause of death. Communities of color, especially young Black men, are disproportionately impacted. Each loss sends shockwaves through families, neighborhoods, and entire cities.
And beneath all of this is trauma — the silent force that shapes decisions, behaviors, and entire lifepaths. More than half of Ohio’s women (51%) and nearly two-thirds of men (61%) have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Trauma often goes unaddressed, but its effects show up everywhere: in addiction, violence, instability, and the struggle to rebuild after incarceration.
These aren’t separate problems. They’re interconnected — trauma, instability, lack of opportunity, addiction, and violence often feed one another. But if they are connected, that means the solutions must be connected too.

Gun violence costs Ohioans $19.9 billion per year. This amounts to $1,693 per person

Firearms were the leading cause of death among young people ages 1-17 in 2023
In 2022, there were at least 165 domestic violence-related homicides in Ohio. 55% were by firearm
Programs and Services
At “I” DEFINE, we believe real change starts from within. Every program we offer is built around one core purpose: helping individuals transform the patterns that once held them back so they can create lives rooted in purpose, stability, and leadership.
Our approach centers on three intentional steps:
Understanding the Why
Lasting change requires honest reflection. We help participants look inward to uncover the trauma, patterns, and life circumstances that contributed to crime, addiction, or harmful decisions. When people understand their “why,” they can begin to write their story.
Building Skills for a New Life
Healing is the beginning. We offer life-skills training, emotional growth, mentoring, and practical support so individuals returning from prison or recovery gain the tools to not only survive, but truly thrive within a community of shared strength and guidance.
Raising Leaders Who Give Back
Our goal reaches beyond rehabilitation. We cultivate transformation. Participants become mentors, community builders, and cycle-breakers who strengthen the very neighborhoods they once struggled in.
Because when people heal, families heal.
When families heal, communities heal.
And when communities heal, Ohio becomes safer, stronger, and more resilient.
We help individuals and communities transform through:
Recovery Community Support
Leadership Development
Trauma Healing
Reentry Support
Youth Mentorship
Violence Prevention
“We don’t just believe in second chances – We help people create them.”
